What is a freshwater pearl and how is it made?

Unlike cultured freshwater pearls a beautiful freshwater pearl of almost excellent quality can be difficult to find or create. This is because everything is left up to nature. As such is not too difficult to understand why a freshwater pearl even in spite of their imperfections are rather expensive even when compared to the best cultured pearls. The process of making a natural freshwater pearl is exactly the same process of making natural seawater pearl. The first thing that occurs is when a foreign object finds its way inside of an oyster or mussel. It can be anything from a small pebble to a parasite. If the oyster or mussel is unable to remove it from its system it will then become irritated. In order to reduce the discomfort it will begin secreting nacre which gives you the stuff that pearls are created from. Once they have been harvested the pearls will be delivered to a first stage factory that is responsible for cleaning and then sorting them by shape and size. Once this process has been completed they are then shipped to processing factories where treatments will be treatments including being pre-treated in cold and warm chemical solution and then bleached. Once the freshwater pearl is bleached it will then be drilled and polished with a mixture of wax and cornmeal They will then be matched into temporary strands that are again matched with the correct hanks which will make them ready for wholesale. For the most part you find that a freshwater pearl is often created in the United States or Japan but is almost exclusively created in China.
A freshwater pearl regardless of whether they are cultured or natural possess a soft surface which may be easily damaged or scratched. As such, it’s imperative that you keep your normal jewelry separate from any type of freshwater pearl jewelry in order to keep it from becoming permanently damaged.
You should avoid exposing your freshwater pearl to any type of chemicals or sprays. Any liquids that may contain vinegar or lemon should be kept away from your jewelry because it can cause permanent damage to your pearls. If you are constantly placing your freshwater pearl in water it can also damage it. There are many other things that can cause serious cracks or damage such as heat so you should avoid wearing them out in hot or humid weather. The humidity or climate change may discolor your freshwater pearl or completely crack the surface.
